Simply Strawberries

1) Creating a plan:

I sketched a quick story board to see how i might photograph the strawberries.

2) Understanding food styling:

I researched the many ways of food styling and gained some perspective on working with perishable foods on set.

2) Shopping for the supplies:

I needed to create an environment for photo shooting because i chose to do it by the window table in my room. I chose to purchase items that were of a certain color palette (beige, white & hints of dark purple).

2) Finding the right angle:

I laid out a sheet of beige-grey paper and taped it down. I used white and black foam boards to create the lighting exposure.

3) Taking the photographs:

I used mirrors to reflect the light into my scene to take photos. 2 were set on the table and the third one was held with my left hand as i took pictures with my right hand.

4) Editing the images:

I felt that I wanted to move away from the naturalistic photos and go a bit extreme so i photoshopped the pictures to have a high dark and light contrast. This enhanced the strawberries and made them look almost surreal.

5) Typography:

I used the American Typewriter typeface for the names of the people however i chose to create my own typeface out of strawberries.

6) Strawberry Typeface:

I picked strawberries that were similar in size in order to arrange them on a 3 by 3 strawberry fruit grid. There was an exception of a few letters that diddnt folow this and used 4 strawberries to create the letter. After taking the photos i erased the white background out of all of them and placed them in sequential order at the end of my video.

7) Choosing a theme song:

I opted for the instrumental version of Christina Aguilera’s Show me how you Burlesque song because it was upbeat and appeals to a youthful audience.

Free phone charging

Phone charging kiosks were found within every 100 meters in the Dubai City Walk. It was convenient and safe because it was basically cabinets with the charging wires inside were you would leave your phone or digital device, lock the cabinet then come back to collect it after you’ve shopped or eaten or anything. I thought this was clever and it was an easy form of interaction for the user. I felt like it was easy enough that no instructions were even needed although they did have a screen with it. image001 (1)

Project outlines

Food as a cultural artifact, the agricultural, social factors that made our national foods.

Context: Focus on Oman, the different national dishes and the influence of our foods.

Audience: The Omani people themselves are actually well aware of the foods however I’d like to raise awareness to the tourists that come to Oman.

Why does this matter? The price of oil has dropped and Oman for some time has been trying to move towards tourism as its third main source after fishing and farming. In terms of food culture, more and more restaurants have been opening however there is a good balance between franchises and local restaurants. The local restaurants however don’t have strong identities and to Omanis it is more or less clear but for the tourists that come to these restaurants, they haven’t that much of a clue.

Why should we care? Although this is helpful knowledge for tourists, I think Omani nationals will appreciate the documentation instead of just knowing some facts amongst themselves, they can in turn learn more about it, as it will all be recorded. People maybe know of the old culinary techniques but don’t know how we got to use them. For example, why use the ground as a natural oven and use palm tree leaves to cover the meat when cooking Shuwa and so forth. Basically, just a general appreciation and awareness of the national cuisine as there is so much diversity because of the historical trade relations.

Research plan: Tackling down all the main national foods and culinary techniques around Oman, visiting villages and taking clear observation whilst interviewing the locals. Moreover I’ll look at the mass-produced foods that are considered national too. On the other hand the snack industry in Oman is quite large in terms of producing everything from ice creams to chips and sodas, which could also be a segment to look at where I can visit the factories and supermarkets. I’ll also be giving out questionnaires and visiting the local Omani restaurants to gather more information.

Design outcomes: creating advertisements maybe?
